How Speed Detection Works
Posted Speed Limits: The app checks the legal speed limit for the road you are driving on.
Real-Time Traffic Context: RoadClub uses anonymized data from other drivers to measure average traffic speed. Matching the surrounding flow of traffic is often safer than driving significantly slower.
Smart Speeding Thresholds: A speeding event is only flagged when your speed goes significantly above the legal limit beyond what is reasonable for safe traffic flow.
Example: Safe Flow vs. Speeding
Safe Flow: If the posted speed limit is 60 mph, but surrounding traffic is safely moving at 65 mph, matching the 65 mph flow will generally not flag a speeding event.
Excessive Speeding: Driving at speeds far above both the posted limit and the surrounding traffic flow will be flagged as high-risk driving and reduce your points.
